On August 28, 2009, twelve people gathered together to lay the foundation of Groundswell International, an emerging global partnership of local NGOs and individuals working together to reclaim local resources and build inclusive local economies and food systems that foster environmental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. The participants are grounded in diverse contexts and experiences from eight different countries (Burkina Faso, Canada, Ecuador, Ghana, Haiti, Honduras, the Philippines, and the United States) – yet they share a common approach to supporting social change and a history of collaborating over many years.   Perhaps even more importantly, they came together motivated by shared values and dreams for the future, and a common sense of the opportunities inherent in this moment. Our meeting agenda and process reflected our participatory, people-centered approach.  Through five days of intense dialogue we worked to draft Groundswell’s vision, mission, values, structure and initial action plans.

By nearly every measure, the event succeeded beyond the group’s expectations.  Though much remains to be done from this small beginning, there was unanimous commitment from all in attendance to turn the concept of Groundswell International into a reality.
